When faced with the task of repainting their 1982, World’s Fair-era concrete box, the Hilton Knoxville provided a clear project brief: develop an innovative concept that enhances the city skyline while setting their business apart from the competition. Enhanced by the addition of energy-efficient LED uplighting at night, the resulting design recalls supergraphic styles of the past for a stylish update to their exterior. The outcome: a high quality, budget-conscious design, unlike any other building downtown.

The design deconstructs the volume of the building into vertical and horizontal color systems. An eye-catching hearty orange playfully wraps the tower on each side, emphasizing unique features of each elevation while also making the tower appear taller and thinner. As seen from the nearby interstate, the bold color pushes the building into the forefront of our local skyline, subtly suggesting visitors STOP HERE!

To balance the tower’s dominant color, a soothing green wraps the base, providing a pedestrian level backdrop for the surrounding foliage, covered drop-off and other outdoor gathering spots. The design again wraps edges, offering playful glimpses of color depending on your position within the city grid.

So how does a simple coat of paint become a catalyst for positive change in the area? Beyond a measurable increase in guest feedback regarding the quality of the design, the Keep Knoxville Beautiful organization honored the project with an Orchid Award in 2009 for its positive impact on the downtown community, saying: “Once described as just another downtown building, the Hilton Knoxville is now a striking icon among the city skyline and streets, with its sleek modern design that stands out as you approach downtown. The drastic improvements to the building's exterior by Studio Four Design give visitors a great first impression and Knoxville citizens a picturesque skyline to be proud of. ”
